Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder amongst many people. It affects the large intestine while causing abnormal cramping, pain and discomfort around the pelvic region. IBS is a chronic disease that should be managed over time, however, most people do not see its immediate effects. Layers of muscle line the walls of the large intestine allowing food to move from the stomach into the rectum. With IBS, a patient may experience stronger contractions allowing the food to move too quickly or weaker contractions resulting in dry, hard stools. IBS can be triggered by various factors including food, stress, hormones, and other illnesses. In fact, IBS occurs in mainly in individual younger than 45, females, people with a family history of IBS, and mental health problems. Diarrhea and constipation are just one of many signs of irritable bowel syndrome. Diagnosis usually results in a physical test, computerized scans, radiography, and stool tests. Treatment focuses on making lifestyle changes and relieving stress in order to suppress the symptoms of IBS. However, medication does exist such as Alosetron and Lubiprostone.
