Chiropractic is a form of health care medicine that “focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health”(ACA). The principle of chiropractic was first discovered in 1895 by Daniel Palmer when he cured a person from deafness by manipulating the person’s neck. He coined the term “chiropractic” which means “ done by hand” referring to the method of this therapy.
In the US, there are more than 18 millions adults and 2 million children who had received chiropractic treatment according to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). Many people who seek care in this therapy have conditions such as low-back pain, musculoskeletal pain in neck and shoulder area, headache and migraine, issues with the joint and extremities. Evidence from research and clinical studies revealed that chiropractic effectiveness for a range of conditions and certain symptoms.
Chiropractic treatment can be especially effective in treating chronic pain. In one study, patients with chronic low back pain has shown more satisfaction and improvement with a month of chiropractic treatment than with just treatment by a family physician. 56 percent of chiropractic patients report that their low-back pain was better versus 13 percent of non-chiropractic patients reporting that their pain was better.
A licensed chiropractor may combine several different methods and approaches for treating a certain conditions. It is by far the most commonly used therapy outside hospital doctor’s office.
