MD is a terminal degree for physicians and surgeons. The initial medical schools that granted the MD degree were Columbia, Penn, Harvard, Maryland and Mcgill. In USA, MDs are awarded by medical school as professional doctorate and is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), an independent body sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the American Medical Association (AMA).
Admission to medical schools in the US is highly competitive. Before entering Medical school the schools require that student must complete a four years undergraduate degree and take the medical college admission test (MCAT).
For four years the students are trained extensively in anatomy and physiology. They exhibit professionalism and leadership skills interact with patients and and directly deliver care even before they graduate. After that they specialize in their chosen field as a resident and continue their education for years to come. Now they are ready to practice medicine and devote their lives to service, care, research and leadership.
